As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country (Proverbs 25:25)

The language in the text is simple and plain, if you know the experience of thirst and quenching it. When one is thirsty, water is needed—desperately to quench that thirst. In this same analogy, there is a spiritual thirst that can only be quenched by spiritual water.

The text can be viewed from three points: The Source of Good News, Christ The Object of Good News and Sinners The Recipients of The Good News.

Source Of Good News

There is only one good news declared by Scripture. Isaiah in Isaiah 52:7 declared this good news ahead of time calling it glad tidings. In Nahum 1:5, we also encounter a declaration of glad tidings. This good news was fulfilled in Christ and the angels declared it (Luke 2:9-11). Paul also declared this good news in Romans 10:13-15.

The source of this good news is heaven (Hebrews 11:8-10; 13-14;16). Heaven is the dwelling of the Triune God, his angels and those saints who have gone to be with the Lord. The plan of salvation for sinners was from heaven.

Christ The Content of The Good News

So far nothing has been said about what the good news is. The good news is about Christ. In the Old Testament, he is typified by sacrifices and burnt offerings. And in his incarnation, taking upon himself human flesh, he died as a sacrifice to atone for the sins of the world. He obeyed the law of God on our behalf. He died as a peace offering and as a substitution for sinners. The gospel is about Christ and his work on Calvary for sinners.

Sinners The Recipients of The Good News

The thirsty soul is the sinner who needs good news from a far country.  Sinners are spiritually sick, suffering and yearn for a good news. Indeed the good news rejoices the heart of sinners. Sinners are helpless and burdened by sin. The good news offers hope. The gospel brings freedom to the sinner held in bondage by sin. Jesus came to bring life to sinners through faith.

Are you thirsty spiritually? Is your soul desirous of water to quench your thirst? Come to the Lord Jesus through faith. There is water for your soul in Christ.
